Celebrating Mothers: Events for Pregnant Women and New Mums

Updated: Sep 4

While some countries go all-in with roses and ribbons, Copenhagen celebrates mothers in a quieter, deeply meaningful way. No grand parades. No over-the-top brunch buffets. Just real moments. Thoughtful gestures. Community warmth. And a little hygge, of course.

But here’s the twist: if you’re expecting a baby, you’re already part of the celebration. There’s a growing wave of events, meetups, and wellness-focused experiences designed just for pregnant women in the city, and they’re surprisingly cool. We’re talking floating meditation, prenatal forest walks, even belly-painting art pop-ups.

In this guide, I’ll take you through how Copenhagen uniquely honors mothers. Those who are, those who are becoming, and those who raise others in their own way. Whether you’re planning a celebration, growing a tiny human, or just curious what makes Danish motherhood so special, this one’s for you.

Let’s get into it.

Key Takeaways

  • Mother’s Day in Denmark is understated and heartfelt and is more about presence than presents.

  • Copenhagen offers unique ways to celebrate moms, including brunch spots, spa experiences, and local handmade gifts.

  • Being a pregnant expat can be isolating, making support systems and community events essential.

  • The Mom-to-be Brunch helps expecting mothers connect, ask questions, and build friendships in a warm, welcoming setting.

  • Hosted by doula Andreea Gintaru, the brunch combines expert insight with social connection.

  • Other great events for pregnant women in Copenhagen include prenatal yoga, sound baths, nature walks, and birth prep classes.

  • Small, personal gestures like bringing food or writing a note often mean more than store-bought gifts.

  • Supporting moms isn’t a one-day event, it’s about creating ongoing space for rest, friendship, and real conversation.

A Brief History of Celebrating Mothers Around the World

Mother’s Day didn’t begin with Instagram captions and flower deliveries. It started with grief, activism, and tea parties. In the United States, it was pioneered in the early 1900s by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her own mother’s work in community health and peace efforts. What started as a heartfelt movement quickly turned into a commercial event (to Jarvis’s horror, by the way, she eventually tried to cancel it altogether).

In Denmark, the tradition took hold after World War II, largely inspired by American customs, but it’s never been quite as splashy. Here, Mother’s Day (Mors Dag) is typically celebrated on the second Sunday of May and tends to be more low-key. Think handwritten notes, a homemade breakfast, flowers from the local market, and a walk by the canal if the weather plays nice.

Across the globe, the idea of celebrating mothers is universal, but how is it done? That’s where it gets interesting. And in Copenhagen, there’s a distinctly Danish way of doing things: authentic, connected, and never over the top.

Unique Ways to Celebrate Mothers in Copenhagen

If you’re in Copenhagen, you’re in luck. This city knows how to quietly shine when it comes to honoring moms.

Start with brunch. It’s a classic for a reason. Many cafes offer Mother’s Day menus, and Copenhagen has no shortage of charming spots from Granola to Mad & Kaffe. Go for the eggs, stay for the candlelit coziness. And if you’d like to celebrate brunch more than once a year, join an event for expecting mums at Cafe OHA.

Need something calmer? Book a mother-daughter massage session or a spa afternoon at AIRE Ancient Baths. It’s luxurious, but also deeply restoring.

Looking for a meaningful gift? Try the flower stalls near Torvehallerne or the organic markets at Vesterbro. Or skip the “stuff” entirely and go for a shared experience like museum passes, a wine tasting (post-baby, of course), or a cooking class. Memories over mugs.

Want to really make a difference? Donate to organizations that support mothers globally. Local shelters, doula collectives, or even international NGOs like Hope and Homes for Children. A gift with a purpose always hits deeper.

Events for Pregnant Women: Connection, Fun & Self-Care

As we know pregnancy isn’t all glow and giggles. It’s a mix of weird cravings, sore hips, a dash of anxiety, and moments of quiet awe. And when you’re doing it without nearby family, it can feel… a little lonely.

Motherhood as a new step can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially being an expat mom without the family around. And that calls for finding your own village and support system.

Therefore, we have created Mom-to-be Brunch for the expecting mothers, where they can meet and socialize with other future moms over a nice brunch. The brunch is hosted by doula Andreea Gintaru, who shares her insights on the importance of having mom-friends and answers various birth and after-birth related questions.

We play icebreaker and socializing games, enjoy brunch and coffee and exchange contacts to stay in touch with each other. Everyone is supportive and friendly, and that creates a welcoming atmosphere to all.

During the two brunches we have met more than 30 mothers and we are happy to be a part of their journey. We hope they will create long lasting friendships that will continue into playdates and more coffee dates.

And this is just one of many pregnancy-friendly events happening in Copenhagen.

Other ideas?

  • Try prenatal yoga at studios like Yogacentralen or YO Studios which is great for flexibility, breathing, and meeting fellow belly buddies.

  • Sign up for sound baths or birth prep courses at community spaces like Luna House or Baby Instituttet.

  • Walk the Botanical Gardens with a fellow mom-to-be. Nature helps, even when your ankles don’t.

The city is full of opportunities, you just have to know where to look. And sometimes, you have to create them yourself. That’s what we did.

Celebrate with Meaning: Sustainable, Local & Heartfelt Ideas

Copenhageners are very good at doing things intentionally. So if you’re thinking of celebrating Mother’s Day, or honoring an expecting mom, go for gifts that are both personal and planet-friendly.

  • Handmade cards from local shops in Nørrebro or Værnedamsvej? Always a win.

  • Second-hand baby gifts from places like Reshopper or Røde Kors Butikker? Smart and sustainable.

  • A handwritten note with a bar of good chocolate? Yes, please.

Even better, offer time. Watch her toddler while she naps. Drop off soup. Text just to ask how she’s feeling today, and actually wait for the answer.

Those small acts? They echo.

Conclusion

Celebrating mothers isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s not about ticking off a to-do list of “ideal” gifts or activities. It’s about tuning in to your body, your baby, your community, your joy.

Whether you’re an expecting mom looking for connection, a partner planning something heartfelt, or just someone who wants to support the mothers around you, the opportunities are here. Join that prenatal sound bath. Sign up for the pregnancy café meetup. Buy that locally baked rye loaf and call it a gift. Small things. They add up.

And if you’re feeling unsure? That’s normal too. There’s no one right way to honor motherhood. The only wrong move is doing nothing.

So go celebrate boldly, gently, awkwardly, imperfectly. Just make it real.

Because in Copenhagen, celebrating mothers isn’t a moment. It’s a mindset.
